You have probably heard of Matter. It is the new smart home standard. Every device is supposed to work together. Apple, Google, Amazon, everyone.
So now people ask me: should I wait for Matter-compatible thermostats?
Here is my take.
What is Matter?
In simple terms, Matter is a universal language for smart home devices.
Before Matter, your Nest thermostat might not work with your Apple HomeKit setup. Or your Ecobee might have issues with Google Home.
Matter changes that. Any Matter device works with any Matter hub, regardless of brand.
As of early 2026, over 4,000 Matter-certified products exist. Thermostats are included.
The Problem: Not All Thermostats Support Matter
Here is the catch: not every smart thermostat supports Matter yet.
Nest (Google thermostat) does not support Matter out of the box. That is a big deal. One user on r/HomeKit said:
“Nest is excellent but is not Matter-compatible.”
Ecobee supports Matter. Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and more.
Other brands? Some support Matter. Some do not. Depends on the model and when it was released.
Should You Wait?

The question is: should you buy now or wait?
Here is my take: it depends on your situation.
Buy Now If:
- Your current thermostat is dying
- You want to set up a smart home now
- You do not care about Matter specifically
Wait If:
- You already have a working smart home setup
- You want full Matter compatibility
- You can hold off for a few months
The Bigger Picture
Here is what nobody talks about: Matter is great in theory. In practice, it is still evolving.
Some early Matter devices had issues. Connection problems. Compatibility bugs. The usual new-tech headaches.
One user said:
“My Matter thermostat keeps dropping from the network. Happens every few days.”
Another said:
“Setup was a nightmare. Could not get it to pair for hours.”
These are not universal. Many people have zero issues. But they happen.
What About Nest?
This is the tricky part. Nest does not support Matter. Not yet anyway.
If you are already in the Google/Nest ecosystem, that is fine. Your stuff will keep working.
But if you are building a new setup and want Matter support, Nest is not the play right now.
The Verdict
Should you wait? Here is my take:
If you need a thermostat now, get one. Ecobee supports Matter. Many other brands do too.
If your current setup works and you are happy, no need to change.
The Matter situation will get better.
More devices. Better compatibility. Fewer bugs. But that takes time.
At the end of the day, do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. A smart thermostat you use today beats a Matter-compatible one you wait six months to buy.
Go with what works now. Matter will still be there when you are ready.
What About Future-Proofing?
One thing to think about: future-proofing.
If you buy a non-Matter thermostat now, will you regret it in 2-3 years?
Probably not. Your thermostat will still work. It will not suddenly stop because it does not support Matter.
Matter is about making things easier. Not about making old devices obsolete.
One user put it well:
“I bought a non-Matter thermostat two years ago. Still works great. Not planning to replace it just for Matter support.”
The Bottom Line
Here is my honest take:
- If you need a thermostat now, buy one. Do not wait for the perfect Matter device.
- If you already have a working setup, no need to replace it.
- If you are building from scratch, look for Matter-compatible options if possible. But do not rule out non-Matter devices if they have the features you want.
The smart home world moves fast. New standards come and go. Matter is a big deal. But it is not the only factor in your decision.
At the end of the day, pick what works for your specific situation. Not what some article tells you is the best.
Your home. Your rules.
Other Considerations
Here is something else: Matter is not the only standard.
There is also Thread. There is Zigbee. There is Z-Wave. The smart home world is complicated.
Do not get too caught up in standards. Focus on what actually works for you.
One user said:
“I do not care about Matter. I just want my thermostat to work with Alexa.”
That is fair.
At the end of the day, compatibility matters more than standards. Pick devices that work with what you have.
That is my take. Make your own decision based on your needs. Not marketing hype. Not what some tech blogger tells you.
Do your research. Ask questions. Think about what actually matters to you. Then go for it. Your smart home journey is your own. Enjoy the process.
It is supposed to be fun, not stressful. That is the whole point of home automation, right? Making life easier.
